A Harvard University study has revealed that the popular fetal sleeping position could be why some people feel vulnerable and sensitive after waking up. Unconsciously, we communicate to ourselves through the huddled work at night that we are seeking protection. Our body reacts accordingly to stress. This lowers sleep quality and causes us to wake up more often at night. In addition, the position makes deep breathing more difficult. It also puts strain on the back and neck.

Does the fetal position destroy our self-confidence?

But that’s not all: Amy J.C. Cuddy, one of the study authors, is also convinced that the fetal position can reduce our self-confidence. She argues that we can change our psyche with our body. In other words, if you spend an entire night in a submissive position, you’ll feel correspondingly exposed when you wake up. Conversely, you can also positively influence the state of your psyche through your work while sleeping: If you stretch your arms and legs backward or on your stomach, you give yourself power and strength – which lasts throughout the day. If you can only fall asleep in the fetal position, there’s still no need to worry. According to Cuddy, it’s also enough to hold the power position described above for a few minutes in the morning before getting up.
